![]() I’ve had terrible experience with Apple’s customer support in the past where they couldn’t fix broken font antialiasing for external monitors macOS doesn’t have the crucial software I need: FAR Manager Windows has better Linux support than macOS (WSL gives better integration which means Docker is easier to use compared to Minikube via Hyperkit vm) My biggest gripes with macOS, after decades of Windows and Linux: I’m in a team where every member was forced into macOS against their will, because a lot of project scripts were hardcoded for macOS by a long-gone “architect”. My gripes about Macs are almost entirely about OSX performance/reliability and command-line habitability: version over version, it almost never improves. Terrible keyboards are another thing entirely, Lenovo went through a bout of that with the X1. Either 90% of their units are defective or we're using our computers very differently. Intrusive admin software has been a problem in the past for sure - especially at Google - but I've bought dozens of these for home use as well. It bothered me when I quit the platform ages ago, and it is still bothering me now: little I care about has changed or improved. My verdict is: the hardware is usually GREAT but MacOS isn't. We've used them for work and for play, for software development and video editing and graphic design and media consumption. I gave her an M1 air this holiday season! We've had pros, airs, and iMacs in four or five different colors occupying our living spaces for fifteen or twenty years now. Between the two of us, and between home and work, we've bought or used probably 25-30 of these over the years. Interactive performance is much better, the docker-based workflows everyone's using are so much faster when they're native, and there's no mismatch between Darwin's BSD userland and the Ubuntu/CentOS you're probably using in prod. Reliability aside - and I realize that everyone values ergonomic factors differently - Linux is just a better choice in every regard for me and the kind of work that I do. I have to restart it once or twice a week. It's not uncommon to see uptimes on my ThinkPads measured in months. (Always right before a videoconference! I missed fifteen minutes of a call last week scrambling to fetch another device because the audio subsystem died and the Mac decided it had to install updates for a half hour when it rebooted.) I see people in this thread complaining that Linux distros are unreliable, but my Linux machines don't do things like beachball for 20s at a time or have complete audio system crashes requiring reboot twice a week. I did all my dev work on MacBooks between 2007-2013, but my experience this year has completely vindicated my decision to ditch the Mac at home and at work back then. I begged them to give me a ThinkPad with Linux instead, and it's been a litany of problems in the three months I've been using it. 2/29/2024 0 Comments Best beard trimmer for close shave![]() ![]() So what should you consider when shopping for a beard trimmer?įor more grooming guides, check out the Best Creams and Tools for Removing Hair, the Best Hair Dryers and the Best Hair Straighteners. But dedicated beard tools typically allow precise control over the contours of your beard and keep you from juggling too many plastic attachments. In most cases, a hair trimmer with a full set of attachments will do this job well enough. But whether a beard is a mitigator or a fashion statement, it’s a good idea to keep it in check.Īll you need is a beard trimmer and at least, say, three minutes twice a week to keep the face garb looking fresh. And a beard can keep friends from saying you look like an egg with eyes drawn on, should time have its way with your starboard follicles. A beard can help hide the destruction of a jawline, a slow descent into neck wobble. ![]() And now we’re passing on all the number-crunching to you, in the form of 15 top-notch options engineered to handle your specific type of scruff. With each year that passes, a beard sounds like a better idea. Some trimmers scored higher on individual metrics than others, but all earned their honorifics as the best beard trimmers on the market, through mountain-man winters and close-stubble summers. What We Looked Forīefore we settled on our winners, we established a few key metrics of quality: And despite all that, they performed exponentially better than any of the others we tried. They’ve had beard oil accidentally dribbled over their blades, they’ve been tossed carelessly into dopp kits (and the occasional Ziploc bag), they’ve been dropped one too many times on the shower floor. Which is to say, the trimmers we landed on here have been put through the wringer. The only real stipulation we established was that each tester treat their trimmer of choice exactly the way they would under normal circumstances: with an utter disregard for its well-being. OK: how would you test a beard trimmer? We used them, of course, over the span of several months, enlisting a roster of hirsute GQ staffers-with beards of various shapes, lengths, and textures-to lend their expertise. If you don't know what differentiates a “just OK” trimmer from one that is top-shelf, don't worry-we've got you covered. That means shaving the neck and cleaning up the sides with a stellar trimmer. While it's blossoming into a, dare we say, even better version of the beard you envisioned when you embarked on this journey, you'll want to keep it defined and trim along that way. A beard isn't one size fits all, so you've got to embrace what makes you unique along with trusting the process (read: be patient). Even when you're in that weird in-between growth phase that looks more scraggly than suave, or you've discovered your growth pattern is patchy and realistically won't fully connect. The first step in growing a beard is to not cut it. Growing a Beard for the First Time? Here's What You Need to Know ![]() And for all of those situations-for basically anything besides a close shave-you need a good beard trimmer. But even if you opt to grow a long beard, you will still need to know how to trim it as it grows. Figuring out the best beard trimmer for your particular facial hair situation is a personal journey, because great beards come in many shapes and sizes: there’s the perfect stubble, of course, or a beard that’s artfully shaped and styled. 2/29/2024 0 Comments Scaffold guard rail![]() OSHA’s standard requirements are the minimum necessary to be in compliance, there is no penalty for surpassing them.Falls from rooftops and other heights are a leading cause of injury and death in the construction, manufacturing, and other industries.įall injuries not only cause suffering (or worse) to employees, but they also create an increased financial burden for their families and employers. Please note that OSHA requires guard rails on scaffolds when more than 10 feet above the ground or deck for both construction and general industry activity, though using them at lesser heights is advised when the scaffold design allows for it. When such a configuration presents itself, it wouldn’t be fair to the contractor (or its scaffold subcontractor) to have to figure out how to fabricate standard rails into the frame when doing so doesn’t improve safety. Depending on the specific configuration, it may not be any less safe than standard guard rails. And, the specific scaffold that was deemed as most appropriate for the project and chosen by the scaffold specialist comes with the cross brace option due to dimensional and usage considerations. ![]() Consider the following example.Ī contractor utilizes a scaffold specialist to come in and put the thing together and take it apart at the end of the project. ![]() But, there are situations when doing so may provide the same level of protection as standard guard rails, and this is why OSHA permits this practice. So, if you have the opportunity to use a cross brace in the place of either the top or mid rail, should you do so? Generally speaking, I suggest not to, and OSHA itself has opined that standard guard rails are the superior option. Again, OSHA has plans to apply the construction scaffold specs to scaffolds used in general industry, so using a cross brace as one of the guard rails in general industry activity will be permitted when the proposed rule becomes final. When bracing is used below the top rail, the X must be betweenĢ0 to 30 inches from the deck. If the bracing is installed above a mid rail, then the X intersection must be between 38 and 48 inches from the deck to be compliant when taking the place of the top rail. However, for construction activity only, at this time, OSHA allows a scaffold’s cross brace to take the place of one, but not both, of the guard rails. Please note that OSHA has a proposed rule, that when made final, will apply the scaffold safety requirements for construction to general industry, so the requirements will eventually be the same regardless of activity type. Mid rails must be installed at approximately half the height of the top rails. In the U.S., OSHA requires that the top rail of a standard scaffold guardrail system be installed between 38 and 45 inches (from the deck) for construction activity and between 36 and 42 inches for general industry activity. They’ve done their homework, and we should always strive for maximum safety even when a lesser option is available. And, ergonomics experts put a lot of research into recommending where guard rails should be based on anthropometric data. ![]() I say presumed because it would be pretty unethical to test this out with unlucky volunteers on an actual job site! But, it sounds reasonable. This is because the probability of somehow falling over the top rail (or under the mid rail) is presumed to be lower than falling over (or under) the intersection of the braces or through the braces where they attach to the vertical members. Using standard guard rails as the means of fall protection on a scaffold is generally recognized as providing superior protection than cross bracing alone. ![]() Has Regen.īig fast charger - at a minimum 8 amp at 48 vĪ generator that outputs 48 volt giving a few kwh. Going in to a harbour without propulsion is often forbidden and just can't be done safely with a cruising sailboat of any reasonable size. Had problems with diesel bacteria this summer and that was nerve wrecking. I had a hard look into the subject myself and I really hate my 2015 Vetus diesel. The slower you go, the further you'll get. You'll have to sail, or move very very slowly to get anywhere. Going full Electric as battery tech is today, is a hard compromise. Well the engine itself is a hydro generator when the propeller moves, but it needs pretty good speed for that to give any real power. So in and out of harbour is what it's used for. The tricky thing is that you'll have energy of about 1 to 2 litres of diesel at best in your batteries. The obnoxious low oil pressure beep of a diesel and having to check to make sure the coolant system works, check the oil level, make sure your belts and pulleys are tight, that the starter motor works, etc etc. It's nice just being able to sail and not have to worry about being a diesel mechanic. The pull start outboard that came with my boat was a nightmare. The upsides are a lot more than just being environmentally friendly, it's so quiet, dramatically fewer moving parts to break, you can charge with solar and maybe even just convert the motor to create hydro-power., and it turns on with a switch. As long as you make a decent mount for it and attach the shafts with something rugged enough it shouldn't be any more complicated than installing any other motor. If I'm completely becalmed I'll motor at 2 knots to just keep making way, otherwise I only use it in and out of the harbor/marina.Īs far as conversion goes, I haven't installed an electric motor on a boat but have done it on an electric snowmobile project. My experience is that you don't really need to motor much if your plan is to actually sail. I'm planning on putting in another 180ah of LiFePo4 for next season and that should be enough for me. You can probably do some math regarding the wattage and size of your boat to get an idea of how much power you'll get per battery. (it will push the boat at it's 5.5knot hull speed but I haven't tried it for long enough to estimate the range) The motor I'm using is 2200watts for a 23ft boat. at 3 knots going into a headwind I can do maybe 12. At 2 knots with no wind I can probably go 30nm on 130AH lifepo4, ![]() With electric you'll notice a big difference in range v.s. If China is experiencing a raw materials squeeze and falling zinc production, as the bull storyline runs, it's not yet evident from the country's zinc trade.Ĭhina's latest trade figures on copper offered little in the way of fresh insight but rather an extension of the twin trends of lower Chinese imports of refined metal and higher imports of raw materials. But the year-to-date total of 248,000 tonnes is still 20 percent off last year's pace.Ĭoncentrate imports are up 26 percent at 1.46 million tonnes this year, largely because of a close to 50 percent surge from Peru. Graphic on refined zinc imports: tmsnrt.rs/2gaVIrbīulls will take heart from July's refined metal imports of 68,000 tonnes, the highest monthly tally since March 2016. ![]() The zinc market is still waiting for the sort of import surge being experienced by sister metal lead. ![]() North Korean imports were 13,000 tonnes (bulk weight) in July - evidence that China's ban on imports has yet to bite. Imports of mined concentrates are tracking last year's levels, with North Korea remaining the second-largest supplier behind Russia. Cumulative imports of 59,000 tonnes in the January to July period are the highest since 2009. This year, however, it is importing what are, by the standards of this market, significant tonnages. The presented paper reveals that neural networks can accurately quantify the relationship between characteristic parameters of punching force curves and the mentioned me-chanical material properties. This is because of both solid demand for the battery input and to booming production in the DRC, up 27 percent to almost 40,000 tonnes in the first half of this year.Īmong the traditional industrial metals, the big Chinese trade surprise this year has been unglamorous lead.Ĭhina was a consistent net exporter of refined lead in the 2013-2016 period. Additionally, tensile tests were performed for these sheet metal materials to determine ultimate tensile strengths (Rm), yield strengths (Rp0.2, Re), uniform strains (Ag), elongations at break (At) and strain hardening exponents (n). Punching force curves were experimentally deter-mined for the sheet metal materials DP1200, DP1000, DP800, DP600, HX380LA, DC03 and DX54. As data basis for the adopted neural network, force curves were measured during punching of various sheet metal materials using a punching tool equipped with a direct force measurement device. Using software systems Python and Tensor-Flow, an artificial neural network was first set up to determine mechanical material parameters (out-put data) from punching force curves (input data). In this context, presented paper deals with a novel AI-based method for the direct determination of ma-terial parameters from measured punching force curves. The component quality achievable by these processes is strongly dependent on the properties of the sheet metal material, so that a permanent digital recording of material data offers high potential for monitoring each component produced. The ongoing digitization of production processes provides new possibilities and potentials for process monitoring of forming and stamping processes. |
